Look around your room and you'll find technology strewn all over the place alongside clothes and books. A computer sits on a desk littered with paper and food wrappers. Your cell phone is tucked away in your right pocket, and in your left, maybe an iPod.
In our everyday lives, technology is making our tasks and pleasures more efficient and enjoyable. Or is it? With each new technological gadget that hits the market, one must ask just how much technology is truly helping us. In the medical and science fields, technology is making it possible to find cures for diseases and create new medicines.
Few could argue that these are harmful impacts of technology, but what about some of the negative aspects it presents? We all saw the disaster of electronic voting in the 2000 presidential elections, and some political analysts predict the problem will only get worse if more states adopt electronic voting. Should we really be using technology at the risk of it interfering with our democratic processes?
On a more personal level, computers are just as frustrating as they are necessary in our lives. Sure, being able to check e-mail and write papers the night before they are due can be wonderful, but what about when the computer inevitably crashes, demolishing a 12-page paper? Not to mention the capabilities of hackers stealing personal information and using it to their advantage. It would seem that despite all of the tasks the computer makes easy, its malfunctions could possibly outweigh its outweigh its benefits.
More importantly, some could argue that technology has enabled our generation to be lazy students. When our parents were in college, there was no such thing as the Internet. When they had a research paper due, they had to go to the library and utilize stacks of books to find the coveted information.
We have it much easier. The Internet makes it possible for us to look up various sources while sitting at home in our pajamas if we so choose.
But, as any professor has most likely mentioned, the Web also makes it easier for us to plagiarize. This isn't assuming anyone does, but the temptation and ability to do so are greater now than 30 years ago.
Technology is also putting people out of jobs. In some factories, humans have been seemingly phased out for robot-esque workers. The very thing we use every day to communicate and do our work is taking work away from some people.
And what about journalists? Newspaper subscriptions are dropping nationwide. Who wants to pay for a newspaper when you can read it on the Web for free? Most newspaper Web sites are forcing people to register before they can access the whole article, but what good does this really do if most people don't read the entire article? Are any of us journalists going to see our names in print on the pages of The New York Times or The Chicago Tribune or just at the top of a Web page?
It seems it may not be technology itself, but our addiction to it that has become the problem. When our computers crash or our cell phones fizzle, we are frustrated. These things are supposed to work all of the time, right? Wrong. They don't because they're only machines designed by humans, which makes them prone to malfunction and breakage periodically.
I think that as any other thing technology has advantages and disadvantages, but sometimes we don´t want to accept the disadvantages because we like it a lot that we just want to see the good things about technology, but we don`t realize how dangerous it is, that´s why I think that we have to change our mind and try to use technology a little bit less

ReplyDeleteanytime you want, you can turn on the computer and search for all kind of information in 3 minutes or less insted of go to the library and spend 30 minutes.
if you want that your important information dont be stolen, you should use it only in legal internet pages.
of course, could be a problem, designed by humans, but these things make the technology our tool for work, so it is just a tool, but some people think that it is neccessary, you can check your mail on internet by some friends that you know them if that friends is from another country, it can help you to practice the languague; you can call to someone by your cellphone at the moment if something is happening, and if it's bad, that is a reason why we did those things, to make our life easier, All the technology are just tools that can help our daily life and it depend who used it for. If it's used for a good reason or for a bad reason

ReplyDeleteI'm not completly sure about it, I mean I like the tecnology and for my future job it will completly necesary, and I love listen to music in my cellphone, but yes you right when you say that is kind of bad that the students now don't like to go to the library when they need information, because search it in internet isn't trustly and is better search in a book.

I think that the technology is good because if we don`t have it, we can`t call to other people, travel or other things,and in the future it`s going to be necessary for a job.
ReplyDeleteBut at the same time is bad because we can only put a click and all the things is in our hands.In my completely opinion is a little bit bad because we can search in other types of help inside of internet for example books, enciclopedias and etc.
I think that technology is a great thing in our lifes because it makes all the things easier for us. Technology can be really helpfull in our daily jobs and homeworks but we shoul be carefull, we don't want to be servants of our own inventions.
ReplyDeleteI'm preatty sure that tecnology better our lifes because, you can save a lot of time using the tecnology. Of course there are some limits,for example my nephew doesn't know the times table because she uses the calculator a lot. We must do somethings in the old way and somethings with the advantages of tecnology.

I think the technology is really necesary on this times for any or almost every works, because in any institution you require at least of a computer to have a good administration of your bussine;and It´s really incredible how we are now dependient from that machines why when you dont have de technology available, feels like the world ends.
ReplyDeleteOk we´re living in a new world, with all those things that satisfy our necesities in a better way, of course the globalization is a part of it why? because actually people want to make the life easier and the tecnology can do it. Personally I opinion that is very good to have more tools to obtain the informacion that we need and also comunicate with any people every where; it depends of the person to use the tecnology and how it use but don´t forget it isn´t everythig...

ReplyDeleteand that is not good at all because we are becoming dependent of it technology help us when we have homework or to know things about other place in the world and it's great to entretain us but we need to be careful chatting with our "internet friends" we can be kidnaped or be victims of violence also now in days students don't really read their HW and just copy and paste that is so bad for our grammar we need to be responsable and to have a limit of time to be in the computer and ahh.. about cellphones (without comments haha xD)
i`m agree whit Alan, whit the technology you can communicate around the world.the internet you can use the messenger or check your email in many places also in your house.

Nowadays you can use a cell phone for a emergency. 15 or 17 years ago, you need to look for a phone and you lost a lot of time so it is very great. the disadvantages that a lot of people prefer the internent they do not practice a sport.

ReplyDeleteYea I think you right but is a problem too, because of the kindapers yuo know, or any kind of criminals they can oprate a kindap from the jail and is so dangerous, so I don't know both are good and bad at the same time, for me tecnology is good if we really know how use it, because the really problem is in our kind of think.
